an interview about the new record

Q:Where does the title of the new album come from?

"Then the Morning Came" is a line from a song off the new record titled "Below our Feet". The whole record circle's around the idea of losing the ones' we love in death and coming to that place where all seems lost and unbearable and then the "morning" comes. There is the undeniable hope we all feel with the birth of a child, finding love, or something as "common" as the sun rising. The songs I wrote for this record are celebrating the hope I found in watching life move on past the loss and finding great happiness in being able to start over each day.

Q:Where and how was the new album recorded?

A: The album was recorded at Crazy Beast Studio with Ben Durrant who is also our electric guitar player. We try to record each song live...and that is maybe why this record took so long. We all have families now so we couldn't go away for week in a barn and drink whiskey till we thought we sounded good. Recording this album was especially great for me because I finally got over (most of) my self-doubt in the studio. I finally had a talk with myself: "you chose to be here because your making a record that will be sold to the public-so sing the song, get the job done in the best possible way and stop acting like you don't know what to do with your voice." It was a 8 hours here and 10 hours there and then we wouldn't record for another month. Ben was using microphones from the former Soviet Union that were smoking up the booth I was in and throwing sound effects in and fuzzy pick-ups over acoustic guitars and vocals. It was experimenting and learning in the best possible way. Many of the songs were taken from a batch of a hundred takes: where we tried the song a different way each time and we picked the best out of the batch. We brought a horn section in and Michael Rossetto back in with his banjo and then we had a record. It was slow but creative and very cooperative.

Q:What is different about this album from your first 2 full length records? In the past Alexei and I would bring songs to the band that were pretty much finished but with this record the band helped shape the songs in their beginning stages. I am also a very different person than I was when I released Find Your Way Home or Casting the Bones... and I think that is true for the rest of Roma di Luna. It reflects greatly in our music and how we perform; we aren't afraid anymore.

Last weekend we had a "focus group" of a group of fellow musicians and critical ears to help us wrap up the final touches on our upcoming full-length release. It looks like it will be "unveiled" in the fall. Local artist, Jason Jaglo, is busy working on album art while the band gets ready for a summer of great-great shows.

The duo (Channy & Alexei) will be heading to France for a couple different festivals. We were introduced to the French audience by the wonderful people at the Sur Siene Festival in Minnesota. We are eternally grateful as it has always been my dream to perform in France. This will be our second time performing in France as a duo and we hope we can bring the full band next time.

Alexei and I saw the Carolina Chocolate Drops 4 or 5 years ago when the Wild Goose Chase Cloggers (wildgoosechasecloggers.org) opened up for them at the Cedar. That performance is embedded deep in my "amazing performance" section of my memory. We are way more than excited to open for them at the MN Zoo on August 27th, 2010 and to hear them again.

A great line-up at the State Fair this year. So many stages and so many choices...we'll be at the Heritage Stage on September 5 & 6 for the "After Sundown" series. We would love to serenade your Sate Fair experience!

Also wanted to thank the great people in Duluth and The Sound Unseen Festival! We had a real good time playing for you and dancing the night away at soul night.

It's been a busy one but 2009 is slowly coming to a close. Channy and I played back to back house concerts last weekend that went really well, so keep an eye out for more of these. Also, we're in the thick of recording our new full length album due sometime in late spring/early summer of 2010. We're also planning on having a Christmas EP available at our annual Holiday Show at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. This will definitely be a limited print and if we don't run out of copies to sell at the Cedar then we'll take some over to the Electric Fetus record store and have them available there as well while they last.
Gotta run, stay tuned!
Love,

Roma
